What is the solar oven and how does it work?

What is the solar oven and how does it work?

1. What is the solar oven?

The sun is an inexhaustible source of energy. A solar oven will concentrate the sun’s rays and then transform them into an energy source.

That’s why we offer you the Sungood solar oven plans, to be made yourself with cardboard, aluminium foil, to fold to put in your backpack and to unfold on the terrace or balcony…. This easily transportable object cooks perfectly and you don’t even need to watch it!

2. How does it work?

The mirrors concentrate the sun’s rays in the centre of the oven and raise the temperature to 120 C°. Cooking does not produce CO2 and therefore does not contribute to global warming.

The dish is then placed in the middle of the oven and the oven is oriented towards the sun. However, you must be careful with your eyes when handling the pan: it is better to wear sunglasses. And beware of burns: the container is hot like any other oven, so are its handles!

Tip: It is much more effective if you use a black or dark-coloured container because it absorbs more heat. Equipped with a cover, you avoid heat loss.

3. What do i need?

In order to build your solar oven big enough for 5 or 6 people, we don’t need much! Don’t be fooled by appearances: this lightweight object is not expensive and is perfectly cooked!

For your solar oven, you will need:

Corrugated cardboard : 100cm x 130cm (used cardboard also works well)

S-ReflecT Mirror : 30cm x 300cm (or a special reflector film for solar ovens)

– Non-toxic glue + brush

– Measuring meter + protractor for angles

Cutter + cisors + marker pen

Here is the overall plan of your future solar oven on a detailed plan below, which will help you to cut the right shapes with the right dimensions)

4. How do i build my solar oven?

1. Prepare a template: squares a large sheet of paper on which you write the template below according to the dimensions indicated. You can use it to make other ovens (a great gift for friends!).

2. Cut out the contours of the oven and the slots with a cutter.

3. Fold the cardboard following the folding lines. You can use a ruler and stick to get a more accurate folding line.

4. Cut out the mirror, making sure that it wrinkles as little as possible. Glue it to the whole cardboard, smoothing well with the flat of your hand.

5. Once the glue has dried, the oven is ready to use. When folded, it can be stored in a backpack!

In order to make it easier for you, we present you the shapes to cut out of aluminium foil separated from each other. You can finally get started, let the adventure begin!

If you apply the order and location of the parts to be cut as in the example above, you will have 0.6 m2 of the additional S-Reflect mirror. You can use it to build a DIY dinette for your children!
